Where will Camp Wonder be held?
Hibben United Methodist Church, 690 Coleman Blvd Mt Pleasant, SC. We will be using the Christian Life and Learning Center Building (CLLC) located behind the main sanctuary building.
What are the dates & times for Camp Wonder?
Camp will be held the weeks of July 10th – Aug 3rd. Campers attend camp Monday-Thursday only, no Friday camp, from the hours of 9:00 am-2:00pm. Doors will open at 8:50 am.
Where do I drop off & pick up my child?
Please park in the rear parking lot and come into the foyer of the CLLC to sign your camper in and out. Drop off and pick up locations for community outings days (Intermediate, Adolescent and Advanced groups only) will be at the community location. More information will be supplied to campers about community outings.
What is after-camp ABA therapy?
After camp ABA therapy is where your child can receive 1:1 individualized therapy to work on child specific goals and parent priorities. 1:1 individualized therapy will be held from 2:00-4:00 pm on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons, with the exception of the last Thursday of camp, for 11 total sessions. Additional fees apply.
What is the late policy for picking up my child from camp?
The camp dismissal window will be from 1:55 – 2:10 p.m. Please be on time to collect your child! If you are late (past 2:10 p.m.) there will be a penalty fee of $5.00 for the first five minutes, and then a fee of $15.00 for each additional five minutes. Please come prepared with cash or check.
What types of social activities will my child be engaged in at Camp Wonder?
Every day at camp, each child will engage in small group activities, targeting social skills specific to your child’s needs, and encompassing parent priorities. The skills will be embedded into daily activities such as art, cooking, group games, fitness, lunch, and group work activities.
Will my child go out into the community?
Once a week on WEDNESDAYS campers in the Intermediate, Adolescent and Advanced (as well as Junior Counselors) groups will go out into the community and enjoy practicing skills learned during the week at the community venues. Drop off and pick up on community outing days will be at that community location. Be sure to read the camp orientation packet and the camp newsletters for detailed information about community activities and locations.
Campers in the early-learner groups (ages 3-5) will NOT attend community outings, and will have camp as normal at Hibben UMC.
What does the cost of Camp Wonder include?
Camp Wonder is a SOCIAL SKILLS camp, which is designed to target peer interactions, group instructions, community awareness and involvement. Camp groups are lead by Registered Behavior Technicians and ABA-trained therapists, and curriculum and instruction are designed by Certified Behavior Analysts. Our small staff to camper ratio will ensure your child receives the individualized supports and attention he may need to actively participate in camp activities and lessons. Your camp costs cover predominately staff costs to maintain our small staff to camper ratio, and your camp costs include all supplies, materials, snacks, camp t-shirt, and community venue fees. You just need to provide your camper with lunch.
Our break-even expenses comes to approximately $2,000 per camper. ABA Outreach is donating funds and services to reduce that fee to $1250 per camper. Additionally, we have established a GoFundMe account to raise money for scholarships for families to further help with camp costs. 100% of money raised will go towards sponsoring a camper to attend camp. Please consider sharing our GoFundMe page with potential donors and on social media so we can generate more assistance for our campers.
What are some other resources for funding for camp?
ABA Outreach is able to provide limited scholarships for Camp Wonder through our donations via Square and GoFundMe. Please help spread the word so that we can get as many donations as possible to assist our families in need.
You can also reach out to various community organizations for support for funding, including the Walk for Autism Charleston, and your county’s disabilities board.
Do I need to pack a lunch?
Please pack a lunch and drink for your child. Snack is included in the camp fee. If your child has special dietary requirements, please provide all food.
What is the appropriate attire?
Please have your camper wear appropriate clothes for the weather, with closed-toe shoes. Campers will be engaging in active games, so shorts and t-shirts are recommended. If specific attire is required for community outing days (for intermediate, adolescent and advanced groups only), such as bathing suits, that information will be conveyed to you via the camp newsletter.
Can my child come if he / she is not potty trained yet?
Yes! We will assist your child with his or her toileting needs. It is the parent’s responsibility to send extra diapers, wipes, and gloves for your child if he/she is not toilet trained. Please include a change of clothes in case there is a toileting accident.
How will I find out about my camper’s day at camp?
Campers will be sent home with a daily communication booklet that will detail your child’s day and his / her progress. You are welcome to write notes back to your camp group leader. Also, you will receive weekly email newsletters describing Camp Wonder’s events, activities, and themes. Additionally, if you give us permission on your camper’s application, we will take photos of your child having fun at camp, and post them to ABA Outreach’s Facebook page. My child can not attend for the entire 4 weeks of camp. Can he / she just come for part of camp?
Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate campers coming for just certain days or weeks of camp.
If my child is sick and unable to come to camp, will I be reimbursed for the days missed?
No, camp fees are non-refundable.
Can I come observe my child at camp?
Unfortunately, since Camp Wonder is a therapeutic camp, in order to respect the privacy of other campers, we can not allow for people to observe at camp.
My child sometimes engages in inappropriate behaviors. Can he/she still come to camp?
YES! We recognize that children with autism and other developmental disabilities may sometimes have behaviors, such as crying or tantrumming, or even some aggression. We will help ensure your child receives the help and supports he or she needs to be successful and have fun at camp!
Can my child’s private therapist provide therapy (ABA, Speech, OT, PT) at camp?
Yes, you may have your child’s ABA or private therapist such as an OT, SLP or PT attend camp for therapy sessions. There is a section of the application that will allow you to indicate this. If and when your camper is accepted to camp, we will have you supply more details about who is coming on what days and what times for what kind of therapy. Since this is a therapeutic camp, we have all outside therapists sign confidentiality agreements to protect the privacy of all campers. Additionally, we will need proof of a recent SLED background check for outside therapists.
Can you bill insurance for my child to come to camp?
Unfortunately, no, we are unable to bill your private insurance for camp expenses. Many insurance companies require prior authorization and approval for ABA services, which prohibit us from being able to bill insurance.
What is your camp sick policy?
If your child has a progressive runny nose, loose bowels, head lice, a fever of 100 degrees or higher, or has vomited within the last 24 hours, please do not send your child to camp. You camper must be symptom-free for 24 hours (without the aide of medication) to return to camp. If your child displays symptoms of illness while at camp, he / she will be sent home, and asked not to return until he / she is symptom-free for 24 hours.
